The Heralds’ Visitations, Peerage Records & Holt Pedigrees
This page contains three distinct categories of Holt / Holte pedigrees. These are:
The Heralds’ visitations are official pedigrees recorded by the heralds mainly between the 16th and 17th centuries. They document families entitled to bear arms and were conducted to regulate the use of those arms. The pedigrees record the main line of descent and relevant offshoots, showing how quartered arms were acquired through marriage and inheritance.
These pedigrees are drawn from published works such as Burke’s Peerage and
The Complete Baronetage. They trace noble and titled Holt / Holte lines,
often extending beyond the period and scope of the visitations and including later
generations and collateral branches.
These genealogies are compiled from parish registers, wills, legal records, and
private research. Although not officially recorded by the heralds, they shed light
on untitled Holt families and regional lineages that may connect to, or diverge from,
the armigerous branches shown in the visitations and peerage sources.

The visitation of the county Palatine of Lancaster made in the year 1613 Edited by Rev F.R. Raines
The heralds of 1533 and 1613 appear alike to have waged war with the wealthy family of Holt of Stubley and
Castleton, who could fairly boast of high local rank and influence. At the first named visitation Tonge recorded
that " Robart Holt of Stubley had marrd an ould woman and woud not enter" his pedigree, which, notwithstanding,
was entered by somebody in 1567, and "the ould woman" had certainly female issue. Robert, the nephew and heir
male of Robert Holt the elder, had, also, only surviving daughters, the eldest of whom, Mary, married her kins
man, Charles Holt, and continued the line. This Charles Holt's father is called a "yeaman," and in the estimation
of a herald of that day such he might be ; but he was assuredly "descended out of the house of Stubley," and
had a very considerable estate in the parish of Bury, although he might lack the advantage of the education and
social position of his cousin, the head of the house in Rochdale parish, who was an active justice of the peace
in the reign of Henry VIII., and connected by descent and marriage with some good knightly families. This
is an instance of the arbitrary manner in which country gentlemen were sometimes treated by the kings of arms.
Charles Holt of Stubley, jure uxoris, and related to her in the third degree of consanguinity, was
not an illiterate man, as he wrote a fair hand; intelligently defended the just rights of the poor chapels of
Saddleworth and Milnrow in 1561; boldly opposed the wrongful dealing of Sir John Byron with church property
promoted the principles of the Reformation; and was one of archbishop Parker's correspondents on the
founding of Rochdale grammar school. It is to be noticed that the herald styles the family in 1613, "but
yeamen " and having " noe coat at all," and yet Charles Holt himself had arms allowed by Flower in 1567.'
(from the introduction p. x-xi)
Raufe Holt of Grisslehurst, co. Lancaster married Ellyn, daughter and sole heire of Sir Geffrey Brockhole of Brockhole, knt. (Harl. MS 1437 fo. 38)
Charles Holt of Whitwall married, daughter and coheire of Holt of Stubley (Harl. MS 1437, fo. 92)
Charles Holt could not prove himself decended from the house of Stubley until his marriage. He came from a family of yeaman and thus had no coat of arms.

Stirnet (stirnet.com) is a long-established, independent online genealogy resource specializing in detailed pedigrees (family trees/ancestral lines) for British and Irish families. It covers thousands of families, with extensive coverage of gentry, noble, landed, and armigerous (coat-of-arms bearing) families, as well as many lesser-known ones. The pedigrees are compiled by pulling together and cross-referencing data from a wide range of published secondary sources (e.g., Visitations, Burke's Peerage, county histories, older genealogical works, and similar compilations). There are four Holt familes documented on the site
