History of Lancashire

This section summarises, in date order, the information contained within the Victoria History of the County of Lancaster relating to the Holt families. Published in 1906, the eight volumes describe the inhabitants of the county based on documentary evidence. References are to Volume 4 unless otherwise stated.

Full accounts of the Victoria County History and other works can be found on the British History Online website, which provides a digital library of core printed primary and secondary sources for the medieval and modern history of the British Isles.

The Holt family appears frequently in manorial records, ecclesiastical documents, heraldic visitations, and local histories. Their estates at Gristlehurst, Stubley, Ashworth, Castleton, and Bridge Hall form a significant part of the region’s historical landscape.
