Margaret Holt Campion (c.1744-1812)
Whitby's Lady Banker and Maritime Entrepreneur
Among the remarkable women connected to the Holt family, few left a legacy as distinctive as Margaret Holt Campion. Born in Whitby during the mid-eighteenth century, Margaret was the daughter of shipowner and merchant John Holt and his wife Martha Storm. She grew up in one of Yorkshire's busiest ports at a time when Whitby's prosperity depended upon shipbuilding, maritime trade, and commercial enterprise. Her family stood at the centre of this flourishing world, and Margaret would become one of its most successful businesswomen.
In 1762 she married merchant and shipowner Nathaniel Campion, linking two prominent Whitby commercial families. Rather than remaining a passive observer of family affairs, Margaret became actively involved in business ventures associated with both the Holt and Campion families. Her participation in commercial enterprises demonstrates that women in merchant households could exercise considerable influence behind the scenes, even when formal recognition was often reserved for men.
One notable example was the trading vessel Vigilant, built in 1792 through a partnership involving members of the Holt family and their business associates. The ship traded with ports including St Petersburg, Stockholm and destinations in the West Indies, reflecting the international reach of Whitby's merchants. Family records show the enterprise was very much a collaborative venture, with Margaret among those investing in and supporting the undertaking.
The turning point in Margaret's life came after the death of her husband in 1798. Rather than withdrawing from commerce, she assumed control of significant business interests, including shipping and Baltic trade. Contemporary records indicate that she became a member of the Russian Company in her own right, enabling her to continue trading with important northern European markets at a time when international commerce was both lucrative and risky.
In 1800, Margaret and her son Robert established the Campion banking business in Whitby, an institution that would become one of the town's most prominent banking houses. The bank's origins can be directly traced to their partnership, making Margaret one of the earliest known female banking entrepreneurs in Northern England. The institution was later known as Robert & John Campion Bank and remained a significant local concern for decades. Known as Robert & John Campion from 1817. Failed in 1841.
Today, Margaret Holt Campion is often remembered as Whitby's "Lady Banker", a title reflecting the unusual position she occupied in a society where few women were publicly associated with finance and commerce. Her career demonstrates how skill, determination and commercial judgement enabled some eighteenth-century women to overcome the limitations of their age and play leading roles in business life. Through shipping, trade and banking, Margaret helped shape Whitby's commercial development and stands as one of the most impressive trailblazers in the wider Holt family story.
